The nickname “Kat” or “Cat” is one of my favourite nicknames. It’s beautiful, and it’s pretty perfect in a lot of other ways, too, even at first glance. Short and sweet, it also starts with a powerful sounding consonant that lends itself to a powerful sounding nickname.
“Cat” / “Kat” is also feminine sounding when it’s meant for a girl, yet, maybe because of how crisp the “k” and “t” consonants are, somehow remains not anywhere near too girly to be used as a male nickname.
It’s got a lovely ring to it, is popular enough as a nickname that it’s easy to remember, yet not popular enough that it’s likely 10 kids in the class are going to also be called “Cat” or “Kat.” Kind of flawless as a nickname, if you ask me.
If you have something or someone to name and you keep circling around the nickname “Cat/Kat” – kudos to you for finding a name to ground you, even if it is in reverse of how many people go about naming typically.
Sometimes names call out to you, and stand out as particularly good amongst the plethora of options out there. Other times, it makes more sense to go the route of tracking down a good name for a nickname that you find to be perfection.
Is it crazy to match a name to an ideal nickname? Not in my books. Since nicknames are used so frequently, usually far more often than a person’s full name in the first place, this roundabout way of finding a name makes a heck of a lot of sense to me.
And I’ve definitely fallen in love with nicknames before to the point where I’ll become enamored enough that a pretty good name becomes an A+ name due to the nicknames that can come out of it.
Take for instance “Lottie” – a nickname I absolutely adore. While I don’t have kids, I’ve often thought if I had a girl, I’d name her “Charlotte” – in part because I really like that name, but maybe a greater part because then I get to use “Lottie” as a nickname.
There are also names like “Rory” that I absolutely love, but that I wouldn’t want to use as full names, so I’d definitely go the route someone looking for a full name for “Cat” or “Kat” would go, searching for a full name that Rory could be a good nickname for. (And yes – thank you, Gilmore Girls, for suggesting Lorelai because damn is that a beautiful name!).
But back to finding names for Kat because that’s what we’re here for.
If you’re looking for something and are worried there won’t be a lot of options, I hope this article will manage to show you a lot more than you were expecting.
I actually feel there were a lot more names out there than I expected that suit the nickname “Cat” or “Kat.”
Many of these are common names. Some are incredibly popular – like “Kate” or “Cathy.”
The vast majority are variants on those names, also quite popular, like “Katerina” or “Cathleen.”
Then you have the unique names, which are few but there are a number in the mix. Names like “Katyuska” and “Catyma,” which are rarely ever used, at least in my experience.
Of course there are plenty of girl names that have “Cat” or “Kat” as a nickname, but there are a considerable amount of boy names as well. I’ve divided up the lists so that in case you’re looking for specifically a female name or a male name, you can jump to that section and don’t have to browse through a mega-list of female and male names combined.
