When I was younger, I had a plethora of nicknames I was called, many which were given to me, some which I quasi gave myself by telling other people, “I go by…” so they knew what to call me in case they didn’t want to use my first name.
I definitely had a preference, though most of the time it was with the group of nicknames rather than a specific nickname.
I feel this is pretty common, to be honest.
For instance, girls whose first names are “Elizabeth” will often go by “Liz” and “Lizzie,” and other variants starting with “L.”
Or they’ll go by “Beth” and “Bethy” as well as other “B” variants.
In my experience, it’s not common for people to be referred to with clusters of nicknames, though it’s entirely possible.
If you’re an “Emily” and are looking for nicknames you prefer to be called by, you might find you have one or two letters you prefer your nicknames to start with, and if that’s the case, don’t feel pressured to say something like “Ugh, I don’t like that, it doesn’t feel like me,” if someone suggests a variation you dislike.
If you know an “Emily” and want something cute and/or unique to call the Emily in your life, there are one heck of a lot of options, and chances are really high you’ll know right away if your Emily likes the nickname you chose, but if you’re not certain, just ask if she likes the nickname before you commit to using it and it sticks.
If your Emily typically goes by one letter (for Emily, “L” and “M” nicknames are very common) you may want to stick to the theme, and try a different nickname, but that has the same first letter.
But if there’s a nickname that starts with another letter you especially like, do try asking if she likes the nickname. It might feel it suits her just as well -if not better – than the nicknames she’s already being called.
I’ve split this article into different sections, mostly based on the first letter of the nickname.
The most common nicknames for Emily are probably “Em” or “Ems” – so keep this in mind and if you’re looking for something a little more unique, either for yourself or for someone else, dig through the remainder of the options to see what you feel will suit you (or if it’s not you, what will suit the Emily you know).
