If you’re looking for an ocean themed name for a girl, my guess is that the ocean has a special place in your heart or is going to be especially meaningful to whomever you’re trying to find a name for.
Chances are pretty high you stumbled across this article looking for an ocean name for a baby girl that’s on the way.
If that’s true, maybe you picture taking your girl to the ocean on the weekends, or you and your significant other love surfing and you expect your bun in the oven to love surfing when she grows up, too.
Have a story to share about your ocean girl? I would love to hear it in the comments down below!
Besides having a new baby girl on the way, there are plenty of other reasons you could be looking for an ocean-themed name for a girl.
Some that I can think of off the top of my head include – finding a name for a new pet, whether it be a cat or a dog, or even a more water-based pet, like a fish or a turtle.
You could also be naming a fictional character in a piece you’re working on – like a novel, tv or movie script, or even a poem or short story.
Or you could be trying to name a video game character/digging for perfect username for a game you play.
There are a slew of other reasons you may have stumbled across this article looking for a good ocean girl name as well, so do let me know in the comments section who the girl is you’re trying to name; if she’s a fictional character, a new pet, a new baby on the way, or someone/something else.
But back to ocean names. I’ve discovered quite a lot of really beautiful sounding ocean themed names that quite literally mean “ocean.” Of these, Moana and Oceana are probably my favourite, and they’re likely the most popular as well.
That being said, there are plenty of other ways to go about finding an ocean themed name than quite literally looking for a name that means “ocean.”
These techniques aren’t altogether original or difficult to come up with.
Essentially, they’re finding names that mean something similar to or revolving around the ocean. Finding names that have something to do with water, or the sea, or even boats or sirens, instead of the ocean directly.
While this isn’t hard to do yourself, I do hope that making this quick list of a slew of different names with those meanings (categorized into sections so you can easily browse through your favourite ocean-themed meanings behind a name of course!), will help make finding the perfect name for your ocean girl easier.
There are a lot of ridiculously good ones, in my opinion. Like “Lorelei” and “Sirena” – which both mean “siren.” I can’t imagine prettier names or prettier meanings for a name. So stunning.
There are also really beautiful names that have “water” as part of their meaning. My favourites are probably “Tallulah” (what an adorable name), “Lindsey,” and “Shasha.”
Of course, water doesn’t always mean a body of water, so if you’re looking for something more along those lines in terms of meaning, “Morgana,” “Ula,” “Pearl,” and “Hallie” all have “sea” as part of their meaning, and are quite lovely names.
There are a plethora of names that have “river” as part of their meaning as well, and I know that’s not quite the same thing as ocean or sea, but if you’re looking for more broad water-themed nature/outdoor names for girls, honestly you should take a peek at this list because there are so many options, a load of which are stunning.
Take “Delta,” “Narmada,” or “Ivria” – for instance. All names that have river as a part of their meaning and super unique sounding, if you were looking for a name that’s not common.
If you’re looking for something more ocean themed, but don’t need to be completely literal about name meanings being after the ocean or sea or another body of water, there are quite pretty names that have “wave” as their meaning. “Genevieve,” “Nami,” and “Geneeva” are three such gorgeous choices.
These are just a sample of the many lists I have below. I also have names for girls that have “stream” as part of their meaning, are “ship” or “boat” themed, mean “coral,” or revolve around the colour blue.
I’m sure there are plenty of other good ideas for ocean themed names, so if you have any, let me know in the comments down below, along with your favourite names and any stories you can share about your ocean girl!

Annie says
Hi, thank you so much for this page! I’m writing a dystopia about a detective living in Atlantis, and I named her inspired by your page. Her name is Tallulah Culleen, which translates to Water Girl, which fits the Atlantis theme.
Thank you again!
