If you’re looking for a great nickname for a male or female coworker that’s still respectful enough to work for a colleague that you are not the closest with, you’re in the right place.
I’ve done my best to come up with nicknames that are entertaining, fun, funny, cute, and cool, and yet still manage to be professional rather than non processional, or abrasive or even insulting. If you’re looking for more nicknames check out this list of funny coworker names that work for colleagues you’re more friendly with, but won’t necessarily work if you don’t know them so well.

Some of the nicknames I’ve included in the following article work better for certain types of colleagues than others.
For example, nicknames like “Ace,” “Star,” and “Go-To” work for pretty much any colleague – male or female. So nicknames like that have a category on their own.
But nicknames like “Boss,” “Chief,” “General,” and that type of thing work better for colleagues that are bosses or that are in general above your position on the career ladder, so I have sections like that for more specific nicknames like that in a separate category.
I have a number of respectful and professional nicknames included for those you are closer with in station, or basically have the same position as you as well.
I’ve got a shortlist for those looking for coworker nicknames for colleagues who are essentially their partners at work. Nicknames like “Sidekick,” “Wingman,” and “Co-conspirator” are some of my favourites and I think are quite warm, entertaining, funny, and fun sounding without being so unprofessional that they blur the line between friendship and professional relationship.

Again, if you’re looking for more personable, friendly nicknames for coworkers, check out this article here, because there are a lot better recommendations over there, but of course many of these nicknames are not quite as professional sounding and definitely are not the most respectful as such for those who you’re not super close with. That being said, you might find some good options if the nickname happens to suit the person quite well, even if you’re not the closest with them.
For those who need a good nickname for a coworker that’s actually beneath them on the career ladder, essentially where you are their boss or team leader, I have a separate list of these types of nicknames as well. “Rookie” and “Protege” are some great options and are not insulting in the least and are definitely formal/professional enough to work for colleagues you are not super close friends with, but still want a nickname for who are beneath you on the career ladder.
Do let me know if you have any other recommendations that should have been up on this list, or come up with other good options in the comments section below! I’m sure others who come across this article looking for a great coworker nickname will greatly appreciate it! And if you’ve chosen a nickname for your colleague, I’d love to know what it ended up being. Without further ado…
