Whether you’re looking for a science themed nickname for yourself or a friend, family member, pet, or even a fictional character, I’ve done my best to outline a variety of different options in this article that hopefully will result in you finding the perfect one.
While there are a slew of directions you can take with regards to finding a science themed nickname, I’ve done my best to list a number of viable options for as many different types of names as I could come up with.

One way to go – especially if you’re looking for a science name + nickname combination – is to give a name based on a famous scientist, like “Blaise,” “Nikola,” or “Turing” then give a nickname based on that name.
That being said, I’m guessing the vast majority of those who stumbled across this post looking for science nicknames were not intending to go this route, and instead want a nickname that’s scientific in nature, but that sounds like a good nickname regardless of the fact that it’s science themed. I’ve focused on these types of science nicknames as a result.
I’ve split the sections up into science nicknames that are biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics themed.
Some of my favourite biology nicknames are “Axon” and “Zygote,” but I don’t think these tend to make the best nicknames in comparison to some of the other science themed nicknames.
I think a lot of the chemistry and physics themed nicknames work really well, like “Ion” & “Pipette” (naming a pet “Pip” as short for Pipette is super cute in my opinion), and the units of measurement “Kelvin” and “Watt” I think would make for fantastic matching nicknames, for instance if you had a pair of kittens you were trying to name.
I’ve given the space/astrophysics names their own massive sections, as these deserve groupings of their own as there are so many solid options.
Again, I love the idea of matching nicknames for two pets that come into the household at the same time, for instance, so a duo called “Quasar” and “Pulsar” is super adorable sounding to me. But there are a lot of great astrophysics and space themed nicknames, so there are a lot of stand out options, like “Nova,” “Asteroid,” “Cosmo,” & “Eclipse.”
There’s also the option of using a star or constellation name as a science-themed nickname, and while many of these might end up sounding astrology related, and so will probably be ones you’ll want to avoid, some of them do sound lovely and irrelevant to astrology – like “Cassiopeia” and “Pollux,” which I think would make super cool nicknames.
There are a lot of good science-themed names that are names of moons in our solar system, so I’ve included a list of these as well. But please let me know if you think of any more, if some great names slipped through the cracks that should have been on here!
